Pony.ai Gen-4 Robotruck Launch: IAA 2026 & European Expansion
Pony.ai debuted its Gen-4 Level 4 autonomous heavy-duty electric truck at IAA 2026, co-developed with GAC. With mass production starting this year, the company targets Europe and the Middle East to address labor shortages in logistics.

Pony.ai Unveils Gen-4 Autonomous Electric Truck: Targeting European Markets with Mass Production by 2026
At the IAA Transportation 2026 trade fair in Hannover, Germany, Chinese autonomous vehicle technology company Pony.ai made a major splash by unveiling its latest innovation: a fourth-generation (Gen-4) Level 4 (L4) autonomous heavy-duty electric truck. Developed in strategic collaboration with Chinese state-owned automaker GAC Commercial Vehicle, this new "Robotruck" aims to transform long-haul freight, dedicated logistics corridors, and port transportation worldwide.
Built on Advanced Robotaxi Architecture
The newly introduced L4 Robotruck integrates Pony.ai's Gen-4 autonomous trucking system and utilizes the same sophisticated domain controller found in the company's seventh-generation (Gen-7) Robotaxis. The vehicle is equipped with a fully automotive-grade autonomous driving kit (ADK) that ensures 360-degree sensing coverage with zero blind spots.
This sensory suite is incredibly robust, featuring:
Nine lidars
Three millimeter-wave radars
13 cameras
In addition to superior sensing capabilities, the truck incorporates GAC Commercial Vehicle's fully redundant drive-by-wire chassis. This means that critical systems—including steering, braking, communications, power supply, and computing—are equipped with redundant architectures to guarantee safe operation across a diverse range of driving conditions.
Massive Reductions in Operating Costs
Pony.ai has successfully combined high-end technology with remarkable cost efficiency. The bill-of-materials cost for the new ADK has been slashed by 70% compared to previous generations. Furthermore, the overall transportation costs per ton-kilometer are expected to drop by 30%.
The new model is built on GAC's T9 battery-electric truck platform, which boasts an ultra-low aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.4 Cd. Combined with Pony.ai’s energy-efficiency algorithms, this design is projected to reduce overall energy consumption by 10% compared to conventional trucks, paving the way for greener and far more efficient freight operations.
Expanding to Europe to Solve Labor Shortages
While Pony.ai already operates hundreds of L4 trucks on routes across China, this global debut signals a clear intent to expand internationally. With volume production scheduled to begin later this year, Pony.ai has set its sights on Europe and the Middle East for the next two years.
He Xing, Vice President of Pony.ai and Head of its Robotruck division, noted that the company is actively in discussions with several European governments, ports, and potential clients to begin road tests. Europe represents a highly attractive market due to its high labor costs and severe truck driver shortages. Although only a handful of European nations currently possess the regulatory framework to permit self-driving vehicle testing, Pony.ai is proactively laying the groundwork for commercial deployment on the continent.
The Road Ahead
This launch marks a significant milestone in accelerating the commercialization of heavy-duty autonomous trucking. By successfully translating its Virtual Driver technology and Robotaxi expertise into the commercial logistics sector, Pony.ai and GAC Commercial Vehicle are developing a commercially viable, sustainable business model. As these autonomous electric giants prepare to hit the roads, they promise to redefine the future of the global freight supply chain.
