Coca-Cola Coke Buddy: Transforming B2B Retail With AI
Coca-Cola is reshaping B2B retail logistics across Malaysia by integrating advanced AI into its "Coke Buddy" self-ordering platform. Utilizing its Central Recommendation Engine (CRE) alongside predictive tools like "Perfect Basket," the system analyzes purchase histories, seasonality, and local weather to recommend optimal order sizes to over 39,000 merchants—driving measurable revenue growth while cutting manual workload.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Coca-Cola is significantly transforming the B2B supply chain and digital engagement landscape in Malaysia by deploying advanced artificial intelligence to assist retailers in their inventory purchasing decisions. Moving away from a traditional, manual approach, the beverage giant is utilizing predictive analytics and AI-driven personalization to streamline operations across its massive network of general trade retailers.
The Technological Framework: Coke Buddy and Perfect Basket
At the center of this digital transformation is "Coke Buddy," an AI-enabled digital ordering ecosystem that supports approximately 39,000 retail outlets across Malaysia. Coke Buddy serves as a comprehensive B2B platform that merges daily transactions, personalized recommendations, promotions, and order tracking into a single digital hub.
To further optimize this ecosystem, Coca-Cola introduced a feature named "Perfect Basket". From a theoretical standpoint, Perfect Basket operates as a predictive recommendation model powered by Coca-Cola’s Central Recommendation Engine (CRE). The AI framework eliminates the guesswork for store owners by analyzing vast amounts of fragmented data. The algorithm generates highly targeted order suggestions by continuously evaluating multiple data points:
Each retailer's specific previous purchasing history and ordering frequency.
External macro-variables, such as seasonal demand shifts and local weather conditions.
Collaborative purchasing trends aggregated from comparable business profiles in the market.
Hyper-Personalization and Automation Theory
Before implementing this AI-driven strategy, Coca-Cola faced challenges with a "one-size-fits-all" approach to promotions that failed to inspire individual retailer action. Furthermore, large volumes of disconnected data, including offline transactions and multiple brand metrics, prevented the company from executing tailored outreach.
To solve this, Coca-Cola partnered with MoEngage to leverage its customer journey orchestration and Merlin AI capabilities. The underlying operational theory focuses on hyper-personalized delivery and automated lifecycle management. By combining historical offline transactions with real-time behavioral data (such as analyzing app visitors who browsed the platform but did not make a purchase), the AI automatically selects the most impactful communication channel and timing, seamlessly alternating between platforms like in-app notifications and WhatsApp. This strategic shift expanded their customized, data-driven journeys from just 25 active campaigns to over 300.
Campaign Success and Behavioral Shift
To incentivize the transition from manual ordering to digital self-ordering, Coca-Cola ran the "Perfect Basket, Perfect Ride" campaign from January to April 2026. The campaign successfully drove user adoption, attracting more than 4,500 entries from over 4,000 retailers across the nation. Soru Group Sdn. Bhd. emerged as the grand prize winner, receiving a brand-new Perodua Alza valued at over RM60,000.
The theoretical goal of shifting retailer behavior was validated by the company's metrics. During the campaign, an impressive 83% of participating outlets chose to adopt the Perfect Basket’s algorithmic recommendations. Crucially, the retailers that adopted these AI suggestions recorded stronger sales revenue growth compared to similar outlets that ignored the feature. Furthermore, these automated push campaigns successfully drove off-hours sales, notably increasing late-night and weekend digital transactions.
The Human Element in an AI Ecosystem
Despite the heavy reliance on complex algorithms, the system is designed to augment rather than replace human control. Retailers retain absolute authority over their final purchasing decisions; the AI merely provides a highly optimized, practical starting point for each order. Patrick Go, Commercial Director (Malaysia & Brunei) of Coca-Cola Bottlers Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei, noted that while retailers understand their businesses best, identifying the exact right assortment, pack mix, and complementary products manually takes time.
By automating routine analytical tasks, the AI integration has significantly reduced manual data work. Abdul Mukkadem, Director of Digital Commercial & AI, emphasized that creating automated journeys through the tool is a "one-time job for a lifetime," which gives the team more time and space to strategize on complex personalization use cases. Meanwhile, traditional sales teams remain closely connected to customers, utilizing the time saved on manual order-taking to focus on meaningful relationship-building.
