Nvidia in Talks to Buy or Deepen Investment in $25B AI Startup Reflection

Nvidia is reportedly exploring a full acquisition or a deeper investment in Reflection AI, an open-weight model startup in which it has already invested $800 million. Valued at $25 billion earlier this year, Reflection recently launched its Beam model to compete with cheaper alternatives, signaling Nvidia's growing ambition in AI software development beyond its hardware dominance.

Nvidia in Talks to Buy or Deepen Investment in $25B AI Startup Reflection

Nvidia is currently in early-stage talks to either fully acquire or significantly deepen its investment in Reflection AI, a U.S.-based startup specializing in open-weight artificial intelligence models.

The potential deal highlights Nvidia's strategy to expand its influence beyond hardware infrastructure and further into the software ecosystem that powers AI development.

A Deepening Relationship

Nvidia is not a newcomer to Reflection AI. The chipmaker has already established itself as a major financial backer, having previously committed $800 million to the startup.

Reflection AI, founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, focuses on developing AI tools that automate software development. In April of this year, CEO Misha Laskin indicated that the company was raising additional funding at a $25 billion pre-money valuation.

The startup has been actively pushing into the market, recently launching its first open-weight AI model, named Beam, targeting complex coding and agentic applications. Beam is strategically positioned to compete with lower-cost Chinese alternatives, such as DeepSeek and Kimi, as developers increasingly seek affordable options for programming tasks.

The Structure of the Deal

According to reports citing sources familiar with the matter, an agreement could be reached in the coming weeks, though discussions could still fall apart.

  • The structure of the potential deal is of particular interest. Nvidia is reportedly considering a few options:

  • A Full Buyout: Acquiring the company outright.

  • A Bigger Stake: Providing another equity check, or potentially supplying more chips and computing power in exchange for a larger share.

  • An "Acqui-hire" Arrangement: This structure would involve Nvidia hiring Reflection's staff and licensing its technology without formally buying the entire corporate entity.

  • The acqui-hire route is a tactic increasingly utilized by large tech firms to circumvent lengthy and stringent antitrust regulatory reviews.

  • Whether through a direct buyout or a strategic restructuring, a deal with Reflection AI would cement Nvidia's position in the rapidly growing market for AI-powered coding assistants and autonomous software development agents.
